The vibrant beauty of hibiscus flowers offers us gorgeous blooms to look at or adorn our landscape. The hibiscus genus of plants offers multiple species and varieties ranging in size and color. Their blooms are bright and showy, growing in an array of colors and shapes. This alone sets them apart as many plants are very limited in color and variation. Many people are aware of the health benefits of hibiscus when used as an herbal in teas, tinctures, extracts and infusions for health and wellness. I myself drink hibiscus tea and use it in various herbal applications for specific health benefits. Some are aware the blooms are sometimes used as a colorant in various cosmetics because of their vibrancy and vividness. You may even see hibiscus extract in baby washes and shampoo, where it acts as a gentle cleanser and skin soother.

But did you know this tropically inspiring flower and its leaves can work for you in your beauty and skin care regimen? Or that it’s a powerhouse of skin assisting and anti-aging properties and benefits as well?

Alright, now that I have your attention, let’s look at the beauty of hibiscus for your beauty and skin care needs.
.

Hibiscus is high in superb naturally occurring antioxidants that help fight the effects of free radicals that can damage skin, cause dullness and contribute to premature aging. These antioxidants, called anthocyanosides, not only gives hibiscus flowers their color but they also have powerful anti-inflammatory properties. The beautiful petals are also rich in vitamin C and contain varying amounts of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and iron. Hibiscus flowers contain amino acids which are essential to the human body both inside and out. What’s more, they also contain oligopeptides, peptides consisting of 2-10 amino acids bonded in an un-branched linear chain. More on that in the next paragraph. Why is this significant? Peptides have been shown repeatedly in research to have skin-smoothing and anti-aging properties and abilities. While not the magical fountain of youth many portray them to be, when peptides are used in products with other skin replenishing and restorative ingredients, those products can address multiple skin care needs brilliantly and you will see results with appropriate use over time.

On that note, from a scientific and chemistry aspect, here’s a little info on amino acids and how they form peptides and why both can be useful and very beneficial to skin and in skin care products. Amino acids are essentially the basic and necessary building blocks of enzymes, hormones, proteins and body tissues.  The molecules of amino acids contain an amino group (NH2 ), and a carboxyl group, (COOH). An interesting thing happens within amino acids between these two groups. When the carboxyl group of one molecule reacts with the amino group of another molecule, the two amino acid molecules link to each other, releasing a molecule of water which creates a peptide bond. This is what is known as a dehydration synthesis reaction or a condensation reaction and the resulting joined amino acids create a molecular chain called a peptide. There are several types of peptides. Some have 2 amino acids joined in one peptide bond and are known as dipeptides. Some have three amino acids joined by two peptide bonds known as a tripeptide. And so on. As the chain increases, some peptide bonds may branch off the linear chain while others may be un-branched. Long un-branched linear chains consisting of 50 or more amino acids are called polypeptides. Oligopeptides, mentioned in the previous paragraph, are chains with no branches, up to 20 amino acid molecules and up to 19 peptide bonds.
.

As you can imagine, this unique molecular reaction creates a strong molecular bond of amino acids that’s difficult to break. Furthermore, the unbonded amino acids and the bonded amino acids, the peptides, form a marvelous partnership of chemistry. When this partnership meets skin, the results can be significant by aiding with multiple skin renewing and revitalizing functions and actions. Those include encouraging skin’s natural cell turnover rate, collagen and elastin production, hydration retention, pigmentation balance, and firming actions. All of these are fundamental for healthy resilient skin that retains a more youthful appearance and feel, making amino acids and peptides very desirable for skin of all ages, types and tones.
.

Back to the beauty of hibiscus and some the ways it can benefit the skin because of the above. In addition to the benefits given above due to the amino acids and peptides, in its various forms, hibiscus flowers as well as the plant’s leaves have been proven to nourish and strengthen skin, hair and nails. In appropriate applications, hibiscus is incredibly hydrating while it helps support and stimulate natural skin and cell function as well as assists in balanced sebum production and more. This supportive and stimulating action encourages skin to retain and hold water (Hello hydration!), aids in elasticity and the skin’s ability to self-renew. This, in turn, results in younger looking and more even-toned skin with more resilience and self-restorative abilities.  Hibiscus flowers are naturally gentle yet deep pore cleansers due to the natural surfactants and saponins they contain. What’s more, in powder form, they are a gentle, non-damaging exfoliant. They have the ability to soothe and soften skin and to firm, lift and brighten the skin in both appearance and feel. Hibiscus flowers are also known to help even out skin tone and texture, assist with reducing inflammation and is said to be protective against some forms of acne with its cleansing and balancing properties. Would you have ever imagined so much was packed into those delicate blossoms?
